40 days and 40 nights Adventure: Day 8

Dear George,

Weather is nice this evening,  a mild 10*C outside.  Train was 2 mins late this afternoon.  Stamps are 46p.

I'm not feeling too great right now.  A cold, or something is coming on.  I really don't want to blame a meat free diet for this feeling of unwell but i think there is some weight for that argument.  I think it's just that i'm not eating enough, not enough calories.  I'm still running a lot ( 4 mile jog every other day) and what with cramming in my university work i',m just not finding time to eat plenty...also i could be felling a wee bit down because i've cut sugar and sweets from my diet... moan moan moan... i think i need a holiday... or to do a hopping race.  In fact i think i'll do both!

Take care buddy

40 days and 40 nights Adventure: Day 7

Dear George,

The weather has been very mild of late, spring is defiantly on its way. The temperature right now is 10*C.  My train this morning ran right on time and a first class stamp is 46p.

Right then... Lent is going well for me so far.  It has been 7 days without meat. do i miss it? yes! like i've said before, i'm finding myself feeling hungry all the time.  I will say though that what i'm eating is so very yummy. I had a lovely quiche the other day and it has been keeping me going since the weekend.  Also i tried Quorn for the first time on Sunday, with spaghetti bolognese and i really enjoyed it. i thought i'd hate it but i was rather tasty.  So the question is, should i carry it on? i only planned to do it for a week. Maybe i'll carry on until the weekend...do 10 days.  After all i will be sticking to the rest of my lent promises.

Recorded 2 podcasts today with Zoe.  A random topic episode and an episode where we pull questions about high school from the notorious chinaman's hat... i'm still having problems completing the Art episode so please bare with me.

Off to bed now mate, i hope life is treating you well. i know i alway say i miss you but sometimes it really makes me sad that you're not at the end of the phone....

take care buddy,

40 days and 40 nights Adventure: Day 5

Dear George,

Day 5 without meat.  Today is a Sunday, a day when i'd normally have bacon sandwiches for breakfast and spend a long afternoon creating a wonderful roast dinner..but not this time. It was muesli for breakfast and right now i'm looking across the Internet to find a veggie dish that can compete with my usual Sunday lunch.

It's strange i've really noticed how much i miss eating animals... i guess it's because i'm thinking about it all the time.  i'm so used to popping out for a sandwich i've never had to give eating 2 thoughts.  the one thing i'm having issue with is what do i have with  my veg. It has always been a part of the meal not the whole thing...you know what i mean? the other day i roasted up some veg, mushed some potatoes and still my plate looked wrong, 'where's the main bit' i asked myself.  i know this isn't great blogging but this man needs meat... urgh... i think i'm going to make a quiche.

40 days and 40 nights Adventure: Day 2

Dear George,

Day two and all ready i'm struggling. I'm usually fine when i give things up for lent, i think i'm finding it hard because i'm thinking about it too much.  It was easy not to bother with sugar in my tea or grab a sandwich rather than a burger for lunch, these things are better for me anyway.  Now, you see i'm having to think hard about all my meals.

I just read that last sentence back to myself and i can see that this is not greatest adventure i've every been on but you'll have to take my word that this is up there with being the most challenging.  I went to the supermarket today for my weekly shop.  all my lunches and dinners are planned out until Wednesday (the day i decide whether or not to go back to meat).  For lunch i enjoyed fish fingers, mashed potatoes and baked beans nyum nyum nyum!  Dinner was a little more tricky, veg has always been a side dish for me, so what would be the heart of the meal? While i idly gazed about the kitchen, trying to come to terms with the foolish things i do just to have something to write about, i glanced upon a vegetarian cook book, gathering dust on a shelf.  I laid it out in front of me, closed my eyes and threw open the book to a random page... that is why i had cauliflower cheese this evening (with roasted Mediterranean veg!).  It was yum-tastic.

that's two days of being a vegetarian.  only two days... i can feel my tummy rumbling, the veg is just not enough for my savage man body.  I may have to have some toast before bed.  Please please please send me your veggie recipes.  I promos to make them and write about them...thrilling stuff i'm sure you'll agree.

Outside it's 10*C and stamps are 46p

40 days and 40 nights Adventure: Day 1

Dear George,

Today is Ash Wednesday, 1st day of lent.  It's a bright and sunny 9*C outside.  I've not jumped on my train yet but i'm feeling positive that it'll be on time.  A first class stamp cost 46p.

For the next 40 days i will have no sugar in my tea, eat no fast food, there is to be no chocolate or cola in my diet, and foe this first week at the very least, NO MEAT... already i'm having to re-evaluate what to i'm doing for lunch.  i can see this getting quite frustration.  this blog will chart my mind deteriorating as i over dose on cheese and pickle sandwiches.

What really isn't helping the situation is that i'm trying very hard to avoid my flatmate and trying not to use the kitchen.  I'm not about to slag her off or anything, it's just she can be a little thoughtless at times and recently seemed to have gone to great lengths to annoy me. On the whole she's awesome, i rarely see her anyway and she's very easy on the eyes but for a tiny person she can't half make a noise.  I guess the reason i'm avoiding her is because she had been a bleeding nuisance last week, clomping around the house at 4 in the morning on several occasions and other tiny things that have added up and made me want to pull her arms off.  I don't want to fall out with her, we've got such a happy house... i figure the less time i see her the less there is for me to get irritated by her.

Anyway, i'm off the butchers... shit, i mean the green grocers...
Take care buddy,

Little Dave

Lent Adventure

Dear George,

Good evening mate, how are you?  Today is Pancake day.  The weather has been quite mild over the last couple of days, right now it's 9*C and a little cloudy.  My train was on time for the journey to work but 10 minutes late coming home.  A first class stamp will set you back 46 pence.

So with it being Pancake day today it means that lent starts tomorrow.  What will you be giving up?  Maybe you could give up travelling around the world and leaving me alone?!  I try to be a good Catholic and give something up every year, last year i gave up sugar in my tea.  It was tough but i did it.. Jesus would be proud.

This year i plan to give up all take away food... that includes fish and chips, subway sandwiches, fast food etc... i'm also going to give up sugar in my tea again.  What i am also going to try is giving up meat... yes you heard me right, i'm going to have a go at giving up meat.  I doubt very much i'll last the whole 40 days but i will go meat free for one week at least.

Are you giving up anything?  I'd love to know... in fact if anyone else who reads this is giving something up let me know.  I will do my best to stick to my vows and keep you all up to date.

Take care buddy,
Yours,
Little Dave

Valentine's Adventure

Dear George,

Let me tell you about a funny old Valentine's adventure i had today.

I love to send flowers, cards and presents on valentine's day.  I'm a sucker for sentiment.  I get such a feeling of pride when i receive thanks for making others feel as wonderful as i feel about them.  It never ceases to bring a tear to my eye, or a lump in my throat.  In order for any cards i wish to send to have a greater impact on the hearts of those i care to woo, i left my posting to today.  This way, you see, my messages of affection are more of a surprise.

The card was written, addressed clearly, envelope sealed and stamp acquired (46p for a first class stamp!).  All i need do now is feed my sweet tidings into the bright red smiling mouth of a Royal mail postbox and let her majesties finest delivery persons dispatch said doting document.

Final collection is at 6:30pm.  I leave work at 6pm giving me plenty of time to negotiate the damp evening streets populated at this time of evening by ruthless commuters all armed with umbrellas and rolled up copies of The Metro.  So imagine the look of horror in my eyes when i at last reached the stout red pillar box on the corner of Catherine Street, and it had a ruddy great metal plate over the slot, with a notice informing me that this post box was "FAULTY".

Now, what constitutes as a faulty post box?  I would say that a post box was faulty if it could not carry out the purpose for which it was built to do.  It seemed to me that the only "fault" with this crimson chamber was that there was a flipping sign over the letter box apologising for the fact that no one would be able to use the letter box.

While my brain whirled away trying to process why this was happening to me, my eyes blinked frantically and my mouth made spluttering sounds.  The heavens opened, the water penetrated all three layers of clothing. The envelope turned into a limp, lifeless rag in my hand and with an empty sigh i vowed to never again express my love without the help of the Internet.

Take care buddy,

Little Dave

Chinaman's Adventure episode 18 - Spider!

Dear George,

How are you doing this fine day?  It's 5*C outside, and it's been pretty damn cold these last few weeks.  The trains have continued to run on average of 2 minutes late every journey i've taken.  Singer/crack addict Whitney Huston died in the bath the other day and a first class stamp is 46 pence...

Well here is my Podcast offering this week.  This was recorded a couple of weeks ago while i was on my own one night after work.  i would like to thank everyone who sent in messages and questions for the most recent Podcast Zoe and i record just this weekend past. i'm editing it as i type...sadly the sound quality is a wee bit poor but i will cobble something together.  But for the time being please enjoy...

Hiding in the office Adventure

Dear George,

The show i work on has just finish for the night. It was a successful show, standing ovation and everything...i skipped my merry way to the stage to begin the shut down procedure for the night when a member of the public asked if i could direct them to the stage door so that they may get an autograph off the leading stars of the show... "of course i can help, in fact follow me i'll take you there" is what i said...

Well, this particular member of the public was a chap...a 'confirmed bachelor' one could say, or a 'friend of Dorothy's'..or you could just this bloke was gay, all are true.  As we walked he told me of my handsome face, and asked if was free for a drink... panic set in, once again (and i do this a lot!) i mistook flirting for politeness and found myself in the awkward situation of having to turn away an admirer... like an idiot i said i was in a rush this evening and couldn't possibly go out.  Why oh why didn't i just say i wasn't gay...because i didn't want to hurt his feelings, he'd been so brave to ask me out.

Anyway, i'm sitting in the office waiting until he's gone away.

Weekend in Exeter Adventure part 2

Dear George,

The weather here is just...snowy.  Yes that's right, while you're over there in Australia, we're getting snowed on and as predicted London Transport self imploded.  Right now it's 2*C outside.  My train was on time this morning, however Saturday morning my train broke down, then the next train was 15mins late...that night a power station lost power and every...and i do mean EVERY...train leaving Charring Cross was delayed by hours.  A first class stamp is 46p.

I've started my Open University course so i'm finding it a little hard to fit in the blog with all the assignments so bare with me, i'll do my best to keep you up to date.  As for the Podcast, i've recorded a solo Podcast that i may or may not stick up...it's strange talking on my own for that long without someone there to tell me if i'm boring.  So for now here is another blog entry i could not throw up the other weekend, so here it is now...

**from Friday 27th Jan**

you find me sat in a Cafe Nero, sipping a lovely cup of earl grey and nibbling away on a chicken and pesto grilled panini, listening in on a conversation between a mum and her spoilt ungrateful spawn. mother is currently reasoning with the youth about the size of any and all future presents and gifts since "We bought you a laptop from Christmas, i've added you to the insurance so you can drive my car.  We're paying for your lessons, we've payed for the course you're taking and your Dad put £1000 into your account…you're going to have to wait for all those little add-ons your after (they never did discus what these add-ons were)

to which she replied

"but when Ben was added to the insurance there wasn't all this fuss"

"that's because Ben paid the extra for the insurance" her mother replied

What a charming young lady she is...

So why am i sat in Cafe Nero? why a chain coffee house and not a cool independent one?  Well i'll tell you why...

I like Exeter, i love the student vibe you get from being here.  There is a good mix of quirky little independent stores and big name clothes shops.  I especially adore a little cafe called 'Boston Tea Party' they have a cracking menu and do a mean full English, all reasonably priced…they have free wi-fi there too which is great if you're like me… pretentious.  Sadly, this all comes with a down side.  This oasis of tea and comfy chairs is heavy populated by students with nothing better to do with their days but laboriously sip herbal tea for hours while tapping away on laptops, curling up on all comfy sofas and spreading any and all personal belongings across surrounding tables and chairs… they've turned these places into common rooms. Is it any wonder why independent cafes struggle? these places are full for hours with customers who hardly buy a thing, while folk like me are driven away to purchase of hot beverages from a Starbucks or Costa Coffee, where we know no morally superior student would dare to tread.  I spend £8 on a sandwich and pot of tea and Cafe Nero's empire grows, A student spends a third on the same thing but nests in the good seats for an hour or two, preventing the arrival of more income. This adorable tea shop struggles for rent money and dissolves in to nothingness while all around come cries of saddened pain from the very costumers who by populating the beanbags and sofas caused the untimely end to this small section of paradise…  But do you know what the real problem i have with all this? …the very students i talk about, the cool, trendy, individuals, who slam capitalism, shun chain stores and would gladly sit waxing judgemental over everyone else while sat in a "locally sourced" coffee house, are working here in Cafe Nero… Still, at least i've got a comfy seat.

Weekend in Exeter Adventure

Dear George,

Afternoon George, what state do i find you in today?  Here is one of the many letters form the weekend previous that due to the lack of internet connection i could not post to you...

Good morning to you my friend how are you? I am up early today, i'm making another journey down to Exeter on the 0820 train from London Waterloo.  It is a chilly 4*C in the capital this morning, my train was bang on time and i've upgraded myself to first class.  Current i'm enjoying a lovely cup of tea, an almond croissant  and watching an episode of Smallville.  A first class stamp is 46p.

It's my niece's birthday this weekend which is what prompted this little adventure.  She doesn't know i coming down so it should be a lovely surprise for her…. we're going bowling then going to pizza hut, i may very well have to do the same from my next birthday.

The journey is so far without incident and it has given me time to think of a idea for a new Podcast…now bare with me now, this doesn't mean an end to CMA, no no no, it's just a side project. I call it AQUATIC JUSTICE!

Aquatic Justice will be a podcast chronicling the comic book adventures of my new favourite super hero Aquaman.  He's had some bad publicity over the years.  He's considered to be a bit of a joke in the comic book community, a laughing stock, the weakest link in the Justice League.  However, since the DC Reboot he has come back with vengeance.  He has a brand new comic and his appearance in the the JLA comic was pretty bad ass.  I have tried many times to write about Aquqman (a.k.a. Arthur Currie) but no matter how much i try i don't do the man justice and my quest to turn the world from Aqua-haters to Aqua-lovers seemed destined to fail.  That was until one lazy sunday afternoon i decided to irritate Sophie by reading aloud the section in JLA number 4 where our moistened hero commands a shiver of sharks to leap forth from the sea and tear apart an oncoming mass of demons…it was awesome!

Not too long after that i subjected another friend of mine to a yummy slice of Dave narrated Aquaman gateau. it went down well, a little too well in fact because when i'd informed my late that i was currently on Aquaman number 4 she was outraged that she'd missed out on the story and declared that i was to read no further until she had caught up with the story…what was i to do?

A few days afterward, the cogs in my mind finally reached full speed and the the idea took form.  I will use the medium of podcasting to retell the adventures of Aquaman. This way no one would miss out on his story or miss my dulset tones bringing to live the colourful underwater world from the pages of DC's clammy crusader.

So over the next few weeks i'll be piecing together some artwork and the stories ready to record a pilot podcast, and deal out some AQUATIC JUSTICE!

Take care buddy,
Yours,
Little Dave
